Schloss Moosdorf

Schloss Moosdorf stands in the village of Moosdorf, part of Aiterhofen in Lower Bavaria. The building is a remnant of a larger 17th-century complex, now reduced to a single wing. A medieval tower mound and moat once surrounded the site, traces of which remain beneath the garden. The estate was recorded as a fortified manor in the 12th century under Reinolt von Mosedorf. Over the centuries it passed through many noble families, including the Lamp, Waller and Helmberger. By the 18th century it had become a Hofmark, a small jurisdictional estate. The present house was built in 1671 and enlarged late in the 18th century. A legend claims an underground passage once linked it to Schloss Schambach four kilometres away, but the tunnel is not accessible and may never have existed. The property has had many owners, from the Zehentner family to a local farmer named Zirngibl. Today it houses a working dental practice. Despite its reduced size, the building remains listed as a monument. Visitors see a plain, single-storey wing of brick and plaster set in a quiet village street. The garden still shows traces of the old moat and the vanished tower site. Inside, the rooms are adapted for modern use and not open to the public. The surrounding lanes lead past farmyards and fields typical of the Isar valley landscape. From the village green there are views across the flat countryside towards Straubing.
