Schloss

Schloss Alexandersbad stands at the heart of the spa village of Bad Alexandersbad in the Fichtelgebirge hills of Upper Franconia. It began in 1782 as a guest house for visitors to the newly developed mineral spring, built for Markgraf Alexander of Brandenburg-Ansbach. The plain early-classical building replaced earlier wooden pavilions and stables designed by court architect Johann Gottlieb Riedel.
The place matters because it marks the moment when a humble iron-rich spring became a state-backed health resort. Markgraf Alexander spent nearly 40,000 gulden to turn the source into a fashionable cure, complete with 27 rooms, a concert hall, tree-lined avenues and landscaped walks. By 1833 the main block measured 58 metres long and 12 metres wide, with 43 smaller chambers and a second house providing another eleven.
Inside, the two-and-a-half-storey central section projects slightly, its four-window front marked by a Latin inscription celebrating public health. Flanking two-storey wings hold the former guest rooms, their floors separated by a continuous string course. Outside, a broad terrace once held two granite pyramids feeding water into stone basins, while tall lime trees and mixed parkland offered shaded strolls. A fourfold avenue leads down to the restored spring, now capped by an octagonal pavilion on granite columns, echoing the orderly elegance of the 18th-century cure.
