Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre

The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre occupies the upper floor of a disused cement factory beside the beach at Charmouth in Dorset. It sits within the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, a 155-kilometre stretch of coastline famous for its Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks. These layers record around 185 million years of Earth’s history and contain many important fossil zones. The centre was founded in 1985 by local residents worried about damage to the cliffs caused by fossil hunters. It now acts as an independent charity and educator, running guided walks and events to fund its work. The centre’s displays explain the geology and fossils of the Jurassic Coast in ways that meet the National Curriculum for local schools. A 2014 grant from the Primary Science Teaching Trust paid for a classroom and teaching resources. The centre also relies on donations and grants from bodies such as the Heritage Lottery Fund. Its role has grown from a small local initiative into a key educational resource for visitors and school groups alike. Inside, visitors find interactive exhibits about fossils and the coastline’s history. There are also guided fossil-hunting walks along the shore. The building itself, with its sea views, adds to the experience. Outside, the beach and cliffs offer direct contact with the rocks and fossils the centre describes. The centre’s staff help visitors understand what they see both here and along the wider World Heritage Site.
