Pfarrkirche hll. Petrus und Paulus Viehdorf

The Catholic parish church of Saints Peter and Paul stands on gently sloping ground in the centre of Viehdorf, a village in the Amstetten district of Lower Austria. It belongs to the deanery of Amstetten within the diocese of St Pölten and is listed as a protected monument. The churchyard slopes down towards the north, giving the building a clear presence in the village square.
The church’s history goes back to 1128, when it was a vicariate of the parish in Amstetten-St Stephen. A Protestant congregation used the building from 1577 until 1627, after which it was returned to Catholic worship. In 1775 it became a parish church in its own right. The present Baroque structure was remodelled in 1749 from an earlier Protestant church and again in 1965–66 by the architect Alois Stögerer.
Inside, the broad nave has a flat ceiling and a large organ loft added in the 1960s. The round-arched triumphal arch leads to the single-bay choir, vaulted in ribbed cross-gaps, with side chapels on either side. The tower contains a baptismal chapel at ground level and a crypt beneath the nave dating from 1609. The high altar, dated 1749, carries an altarpiece of Saints Peter and Paul and an oval epitaph to Johann von Greiffenberg from 1608. Fine reliefs and memorials to the Rißenfels family line the left chapel.
