Pranger Bad Zell

Pranger Bad Zell
Martin Windischhofer CC0

The Pranger in Bad Zell stands on the market square in the small town of Bad Zell in the Freistadt district of Upper Austria. It is a stone pillar dating from 1574, decorated with coats of arms and carved geometric patterns. At its top sits a small iron figure in armour, holding a shield bearing the crest of the Jörger von Tollet family.

This historic pillar marks the centre of the old market square where public punishments once took place. Its inscription and craftsmanship reflect the power of local lords in the late 16th century. The Pranger is one of the few surviving examples of its kind in the region.

Visitors find the pillar standing beside the old town hall, surrounded by traditional buildings. The surrounding square remains a lively place for markets and events. The Pranger itself is a quiet reminder of a time when justice was publicly displayed.
