Ffos Gau

Ffos Gau is a Bronze Age ring cairn near Pontarfynach in Ceredigion. It stands on a hillside at grid reference SN839768, marked simply as ‘Cairn’ on Ordnance Survey maps. The site belongs to a class of prehistoric monuments built by the Celts to mark special places. Archaeologists recognise it as a ring cairn rather than a stone circle, a distinction important for dating and interpretation. Cadw has listed the monument under SAM number CD204, giving it official protection. The ring cairn was probably raised for ritual or burial purposes during the Bronze Age. Its builders gathered local stones into a low circular bank, leaving an open centre. Such cairns are found across upland Wales, often linked to ancient trackways and other ceremonial sites. Experts believe the choice of location was deliberate, taking advantage of the wide views across the valley. Visitors reach the site by following a farm track to the marked grid reference. The grassy mound is small and unobtrusive, blending into the surrounding moorland. From the top there are clear views of the surrounding hills and the distant valley. The quiet setting makes it easy to imagine how the site might have looked three thousand years ago.
