Ruins of church St. Stefan, Feldkirchen

The Tschachitscher Kirchenruine stands in the quiet village of Tschachitsch, part of Waiern near Feldkirchen in Carinthia. A small Romanesque church once served the local community before falling into disuse. Built in the 12th century as a branch of Tiffen’s parish, it passed to Ossiach Abbey in 1190. By the 16th century its altar and bell had been installed, yet by 1723 only six services were held yearly, showing its fading role. The mother parish changed repeatedly in the 19th century, moving from Feldkirchen to St Ulrich and then Glanhofen. After the last service in 1894, a 1914 renovation ended when lightning struck and left the building to decay. The ruin survives as a protected monument within a walled churchyard. Its rectangular nave leads through a round-headed arch into a narrower choir with a straight end. The west doorway shows a plain lintel carried on fluted columns, while the gable and north walls still rise from rubble masonry. Roman spolia stones reused in the walls hint at earlier building material on the site. The altar was removed to the Gurk diocese museum long ago, leaving only the shell of the church. Conservation work in 2005 stabilised the remaining walls and secured the ruin for future visitors. Visitors walk among the weathered stone remains of a once modest country church. The standing gable and side walls frame the outline of the nave and choir, giving a clear sense of the original plan. Inside the enclosure, the low doorway and simple archway show the craft of earlier masons. The surrounding farmland and distant hills offer a calm setting for reflection on the building’s long history. The protected status keeps the ruin safe while allowing quiet exploration of its architectural details.
