Roundy Park prehistoric enclosure and cairn with cist, 560m north east of Archerton

Roundy Park prehistoric enclosure and cairn with cist stand beside the East Dart River in Devon. The enclosure is a low stone-walled rectangle on the river’s west bank, while the cist lies just outside its north-east corner. A clapper bridge crosses the river a short walk away at Postbridge. Dartmoor’s rough grassland stretches around the site, and nearby Grey Wethers and Fernworthy stone circles mark other ancient gatherings. The cist itself is one of Dartmoor’s largest, measuring nearly two metres long and almost a metre wide. Its two heavy capstones and seven side slabs survive—more than the usual four—arranged with three plates on one long side and two on the other. A small stone circle surrounds the cist, and when Robert Burnard cleared the site in 1893 he found only flint fragments and burnt bone. The enclosure’s low turf-covered wall, about 0.3 metres high and four metres wide, once held traces of a settlement whose hut foundations still line the inner face. Visitors walk across open moorland to reach the enclosure and cist. The cist sits exposed on the slope, its slabs weathered by centuries of wind and rain. Inside the enclosure, the faint outlines of five hut circles show where people once lived. Beyond the enclosure, the land rises toward the Grey Wethers circles, their stones standing in silent rows. The East Dart River rushes nearby, its waters reflecting the wide Dartmoor sky.
