BBC Radio Cornwall

BBC Radio Cornwall broadcasts from studios at Phoenix Wharf in Truro, the county town of Cornwall. The station serves the whole duchy on FM, DAB, digital TV and online through BBC Sounds. It reaches listeners across East Cornwall on 95.2 MHz from Caradon Hill, the Isles of Scilly on 96.0 MHz, and West Cornwall on 103.9 MHz from Redruth. Until 2020 the station also used AM transmitters, but these were closed to save costs. Every night after broadcasts end, listeners hear BBC Radio 5 Live instead. The station began on 17 January 1983, replacing earlier regional bulletins on Radio 4. In its first years it shared an afternoon programme with BBC Radio Devon. Today the station’s weekly audience is 92,000 listeners according to RAJAR figures. It produces local programmes from Truro each weekday morning and on Saturday afternoons. Some shows, such as Daniel Pascoe’s Saturday evening slots, are also heard on neighbouring BBC stations. Inside the Truro studios programmes include news, music and features about Cornish life. The station broadcasts a five-minute Cornish news bulletin called An Nowodhow every Sunday at 1.55 pm. In 1987 it introduced a 15-minute bilingual show called Kroeder Kroghan about Celtic events. A recent podcast, Learn Cornish, Dyski Kernewek, is presented by Danni Diston and explores Cornish language and heritage. The building at Phoenix Wharf sits beside the river, linking the station to the town’s working waterfront.
