Torf- und Siedlungsmuseum

The Torf- und Siedlungsmuseum stands in Wiesmoor, a town in the Aurich district of Lower Saxony. It is a local history and peat museum that shows how the first settlers lived and worked during the moor colonisation from 1780 until land reclamation began in 1906. Several original buildings have been rebuilt on site, including a historic village school, a forge and a colonist’s house from around 1900. The museum opened in 1988 after the colonist’s house was reconstructed. Another colonist’s house houses the registry office, and the entrance building completed in 2011 contains a village inn and a colonial goods shop. Visitors can take part in hands-on activities such as baking bread in the bakehouse, getting married in the registry office or drinking a cup of East Frisian tea. Large peat-cutting machines and peat barges are displayed on the grounds, and the museum regularly adds more historical techniques, tools and machinery to its demonstrations. A narrow-gauge railway called the Mooreisenbahn runs from the Blumenhalle Wiesmoor to the museum. The museum grounds offer a quiet setting where the past can be experienced directly. Original buildings and working exhibits bring the hardships and achievements of early settlers to life. Visitors leave with a clearer picture of how peat cutting shaped the region and how small communities organised themselves in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
