The Neues Schloss Wehr stands in the heart of the small town of Wehr, a few metres above sea level. Built in 1748 by the Freiherren von Schönau, it served as their residence before becoming the town’s Rathaus a century ago. The building was raised in 1825, adding another storey to its original form. Inside, parts of the ceilings still show delicate Rokoko stucco work by Ludwig Bossi. The castle’s address is Hauptstraße 16, marking the street where it has stood for centuries.

The castle is worth the journey because it links two eras of Wehr’s history. The Freiherren von Schönau who commissioned the old castle also built this new one, leaving a clear mark on the town. After 1925 it became the Rathaus, showing how a noble house’s home turned into the seat of local government. The stucco ceilings by Bossi add artistic value to the building’s everyday use today.

Visitors find a working town hall with historic rooms open to the public. The Rokoko ceilings in some chambers remain intact, offering a quiet glimpse of 18th-century craftsmanship. The castle’s position on the main street places it at the centre of Wehr’s daily life. From outside, the raised 19th-century storey changes the building’s silhouette against the town’s skyline. Inside, the mix of official rooms and preserved stucco creates a contrast between past and present.
