Avro Heritage Museum

The Avro Heritage Museum stands on the site of the old Woodford Aerodrome in Greater Manchester. The building itself is the former fire station, renovated to house the museum. It replaced a smaller centre nearby that had operated from the personnel block. The new museum opened in 2015 after a rapid construction period. BAE funded the project as part of the aerodrome’s redevelopment deal. The museum is now seven-tenths larger than its predecessor. Inside, the collection includes over thirty thousand artefacts tracing aircraft development. A highlight is a set of murals rescued from the employee restaurant. The space contains an exhibition hall, a gallery, a café, reading rooms and classrooms. Plans for further expansion were approved early in 2026. The museum keeps the Avro Heritage Trust’s records and displays in one place. Visitors walk through rooms filled with photographs and documents. The exhibition hall shows how Avro aircraft evolved over time. The café offers a place to rest between galleries. Outside, the aerodrome’s runways and hangars remain visible. The surroundings recall the site’s long aviation history. The museum keeps the memory of Avro’s work alive for new generations.
