Palais Inzaghi

The Palais Inzaghi stands on the corner of Bischofplatz and Bindergasse in Graz’s Innere Stadt. Built as a city palace, it occupies a prominent corner site where two houses once stood. The Inzaghi family acquired the property in stages between 1750 and 1798, first under Graf Franz Anton Inzaghi and later under Graf Johann Nepomuk Inzaghi. The architect Joseph Hueber led the early remodelling, while Joseph Mixner designed a planned historicist façade that was never fully realised. In the 19th century the building passed to the Attems family, who carried out major alterations in 1861. During the Second World War a bomb strike damaged the right wing, and further damage led to the removal of the rear wing in 1948. The palace presents a three-storey h-shaped structure with a distinctive knuckled façade and a Josephinisch-classicist exterior. Above the rusticated round-arched portal hangs a sandstone relief of the Inzaghi coat of arms flanked by two lions, carved around 1775–80 in the manner of Johannes Pieringer. Inside, the second upper floor contains the grand Beletage reached by a double-flight staircase with wrought-iron railings. Staircase walls retain their original stucco decoration, though the ceiling stucco was removed in 1952. The remaining decorative plasterwork in the reception rooms belongs to the Rococo style. Visitors enter through the stone portal into a courtyard framed by the palace wings. The preserved stucco on the staircase walls shows delicate floral and scroll motifs typical of the period. The coat of arms above the door serves as a reminder of the Inzaghi family’s long association with the building. Although much altered over centuries, the palace retains its corner position and historic character in the heart of Graz.
