Church of St Peter
The Church of St Peter stands in the quiet village of Little Barrington in Gloucestershire’s Cotswold District. Built in the late 12th century, it is an Anglican place of worship with Grade I listed status. The limestone structure has a stone slate roof and a three-stage west tower. The nave was rebuilt in the 14th century and restored again in the 15th century. It was once a chapel dependent on the church in Great Barrington and later came under Llanthony Priory. The church holds notable architectural and historical features. The Norman south doorway has intricate chevron and dogtooth carvings, dismantled and reassembled in 1865. A relief of Christ flanked by winged angels is displayed in the north wall. The oldest bell in the tower dates from 1638, and a sanctus bellcote sits above the chancel arch. Wall paintings from 1736 adorn the nave, and a large Tayler family memorial occupies much of the east wall. Inside, visitors find a 15th-century font and several other memorials. The wagon roof in the nave is supported by diagonal buttresses, and the south porch leads into the space. The chancel arch holds the sanctus bellcote, adding to the church’s historic character. The interior reflects centuries of craftsmanship and devotion.
