Kreuzbergmaut Hydroelectric Power Station
The Kreuzbergmaut hydroelectric power station stands on the Salzach river near Salzburg in Austria. Built between 1993 and 1995, it is a run-of-the-river plant owned by Verbund and Salzburg AG. The dam includes a 36-metre weir with three sluice gates on the left and a machine hall on the right. A small reservoir stretches for 2.7 kilometres at a normal level of 537 metres above sea level. The power station houses two Kaplan turbine-generators, each rated at 9.975 megawatts. Together they reach a total capacity of 17.7 megawatts and generate about 80 gigawatt-hours annually. NOELL supplied the turbines and ABB the generators. Water falls through a maximum head of 10.87 metres, with each turbine handling up to 97 cubic metres per second. Visitors see the dam’s sluice gates and the machine hall beside the river. The reservoir’s calm waters reflect the surrounding landscape. The site shows how modern engineering harnesses the Salzach’s flow without large dams. It remains a working power plant, not a tourist attraction.
