St Bridget’s Church stands beside the A595 in the small village of Calder Bridge, a few miles from Beckermet in Cumbria. It is an active Anglican parish church, part of the deanery of Calder and the diocese of Carlisle. The building itself is listed Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. The church sits on the north side of the road, its red sandstone walls rising above the quiet lanes of the village. A west tower dominates the skyline, its clock faces marking time for travellers on the A595. The slate roof and lancet windows give the church a simple, sturdy look, typical of the early 19th century.
The church is worth the journey for its architecture and its links to notable figures. It was designed by Edmund Sharpe, a Lancaster architect, and built between 1840 and 1842. The cost was met by Thomas Irwin of Calder Abbey, whose memorial can be seen in the north transept. The church was opened in May 1842 and consecrated two years later by the Bishop of Chester. The Pre-Raphaelite stained glass, made by Powell’s in 1879, was designed by H. E. Wooldridge and H. J. Burrow. These features make the church a recognised example of early Victorian church design.
Inside, visitors find a cruciform plan with a nave, transepts, a chancel, and a vestry. The tower contains louvred bell-openings and a corbelled parapet with pinnacles. The stained glass windows cast coloured light across the stone walls. The buttresses and lancet windows add to the church’s solid, symmetrical appearance. The memorials in the transepts recall local families, including Thomas Irwin and his wife. The organ loft and clock faces complete the interior and exterior details of this quiet country church.
