Semmelberg

Semmelberg is a hill in Lower Austria, forty kilometres north of Vienna. It stands in the Korneuburg district, where the land rises thirty-two metres above the surrounding flat farmland. The hill’s base spans almost one kilometre, and its summit reaches 388 metres above sea level. The countryside around the hill is mainly fields, yet the area is fairly well populated, with about a hundred people living on each square kilometre. To the northeast the terrain becomes rolling, while to the southwest the nearest town is Stockerau, nineteen and a half kilometres away. Visitors find open fields and gentle slopes that offer quiet walks and wide views. The contrast between the flat farmland and the modest rise of the hill makes the spot easy to reach yet quietly elevated. On clear days the skyline of Vienna can be seen in the distance.
