The Unteres Schloss in Immendingen is a 13th-century former noble residence now serving as a community cultural centre. It stands on a gently sloping site beside the young Danube, its L-shaped plan formed by a three-storey main block and a two-storey wing linked by a spiral stair-tower topped with a pointed roof. The complex was once a feudal castle, later a factory, and today it overlooks a new riverside park created as part of the larger Landschaftspark Junge Donau project.
The building’s long history is visible in its architecture and heraldry. Above the entrance hangs the von Reischach coat of arms, an eagle’s head dated 1608, marking the family’s 1504–1834 tenure. Earlier it had belonged to the Wartenbergs, Fürstenbergs and Spätts, and in the 19th century it housed Baden’s first machine works. After industrial use ended in 1989, the site was cleared and restored with state support, reopening in 2014 as part of a modern residential quarter.
Visitors find the restored main building now used for exhibitions, concerts and local events. The spiral stair-tower offers access to upper floors where displays tell the castle’s story. Outside, the enclosed Schlossgarten and the nearby Donauuferpark provide shaded walks along the riverbank, linking the old structure to the surrounding landscape.
