Ebersburg Castle

Burg Ebersburg stands on a hill above the village of Ebersberg in East Hesse. Built around 1100, it was enlarged in 1396 but never had a reliable water supply. By the 16th century it was abandoned, and later a half-timbered house was added after the Thirty Years’ War. In the 19th century the Bavarian authorities turned one tower into a lookout and carried out restoration work. Today the ruin belongs to the State of Hesse and is protected as a cultural monument. The castle’s history reflects changing fortunes in the Rhön region. The Weyhers District Court once administered the area when it lay within the Kingdom of Bavaria. The lookout tower offers wide views across the countryside, and footpaths around the site are marked by the Hessian Rhön Nature Park authorities. Visitors find a compact ruin with a single restored tower and traces of the old walls. The observation tower can be climbed with a key collected nearby. Signs guide walkers along paths that wind through the surrounding woods and meadows. The site is open at all times and shows how medieval builders adapted to the hilltop setting.
