Kirche in Döllach

The Andreaskirche in Döllach stands in the village of Großkirchheim in Carinthia. It is a late-Gothic church first recorded in 1389. The south tower, added to the choir, has three sound stages topped by a Biedermeier cap. A 1738 bell by Josef Grassmayr still rings today. Serpentine doorways show round-profile ribs, and the single nave is flat-ceilinged. Inside, the 1915 ceiling painting honours Bishop Kahn. A two-storey west gallery holds a 1988 Rieger organ. A pointed arch separates nave from the two-bay choir with its 15th-century net-ribbed vault on corbels. In 1983 frescoes were uncovered: on the left the death and coronation of Mary, on the right saints, while the vault shows painted scrolls. A narrow pointed door leads from the choir to the tower, and a sacristy opens from the north choir wall. The high altar, side altar and pulpit were carved by Johann Rotschopf between 1902 and 1906. The high altar’s central panel shows the Adoration of the Magi in Italian Renaissance style, with figures of Saint Andrew and Saint Joseph in side niches. The side altar contains a Lourdes grotto, and the pulpit panels depict the four Latin Fathers. Other furnishings include a crucifix, a Pietà, a guardian-angel group and the Stations of the Cross.
