Rogätz Castle

Rogätz Castle
Reimar von Alvensleben, F… Public domain

Burg Rogätz stands on the steep west bank of the Elbe where the Ohre river joins it, halfway between Magdeburg and Tangermünde. It began as a frontier fortress under the Saxon emperors in the 10th century. The only visible remnant of that early stronghold is the Klutturm, an ancient stone tower rising above the river and surrounding land. The first written record of Rogätz dates from 1144, when King Konrad III confirmed a gift of the village to the Bishop of Havelberg. For centuries the castle’s overlordship was fought over by Brandenburg’s margraves and Magdeburg’s archbishops until the 1449 Treaty of Zinna awarded it to the archbishopric.

The Alvensleben family bought the castle in 1369 and held it for nearly five centuries. By 1516 their lands included rights in fifty-four villages and control of the Elbe crossing where ships paid toll at a chain stretched across the river. Goods had to be unloaded and offered for sale, a rule recalled in the legend of a golden chain said to encircle the tower’s foundations. Under Joachim I von Alvensleben the castle enjoyed a humanist flowering between 1570 and 1582. During the Thirty Years War imperial troops seized it in 1625, but the following year Danish and Mansfeld forces recaptured it and burned the buildings, leaving only the Klutturm standing.

Today the site is framed by the Ohre’s mouth and the broad Elbe valley with Magdeburg and Burg on the horizon. The surviving Klutturm and the chapel tower with its 1700 Baroque cap still mark the former upper ward. Inside the chapel, now the village church, old Alvensleben grave slabs and a carved font remain. The lower ward is occupied by farm buildings, and nearby stands the 1898 manor house built after a fire destroyed the earlier bergfried. The landscape itself tells part of the story: the river’s sweep, the flat plains, and the distant spires combine to recall the castle’s vanished grandeur.
