Herz-Jesu-Kirche

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is a modern Catholic church in Munich’s Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district. The first church on the site was built in 1890 and later rebuilt after wartime damage and a fire. The current building, completed in 2000, was designed by architects Allmann Sattler Wappner. The church replaced two earlier structures and won an international competition with 158 entries. Its glass-and-steel design contrasts with the wooden interior worship space. The outer walls shift from transparent glass at the entrance to opaque panels near the altar. Inside, a walkway between the glass and wooden walls displays the stations of the cross. The worship space slopes down to the altar, with natural light filtering through angled maple and oak slats. A tall campanile stands outside on a limestone square, marking the entrance from Lachnerstraße.
