Pfarrkirche Höhnhart

The Roman Catholic parish church in Höhnhart stands in the centre of the village in the Braunau district of Upper Austria. It is dedicated to Saint James the Greater and belongs to the Altheim-Aspach deanery within the Diocese of Linz. The church and its surrounding cemetery are protected as historic monuments. The church began as a structure around 1230 and was later rebuilt in the Gothic style before being transformed in the Baroque period. A southern aisle was added to the nave, and the tower at the west end was given an octagonal upper stage topped by a bulbous dome. Inside, the Gothic choir has a three-sided closure, while the nave is covered by a smooth, curved vault supported by pilasters with Rococo capitals. The ceiling stucco in both choir and nave features groups of putti, and the west gallery displays painted apostles from the late 17th century. The high altar, completed in 1772–73, was carved by Franz Berger of Braunau and painted by Johann Brandstätter. The side altars are Baroque, one holding a Nativity scene dated 1645 and the other a venerated image of the Virgin of Dorfen from the 18th century. A Gothic font bears a 1769 sculpture of the Baptism of Christ by the same hand. The south porch retains its original Gothic doorway, and the west door still shows its medieval ironwork.
