2025 Graz school shooting

BORG Dreierschützengasse is an upper secondary school in Graz’s Lend district. On the morning of 10 June 2025 it was hosting oral Matura exams for 350 to 400 pupils. The building is a typical post-war Austrian gymnasium with classrooms on three floors and a central staircase. At 09:43 a former pupil entered through the main door carrying a backpack. Inside a third-floor lavatory he assembled a Glock pistol and a sawed-off shotgun he had brought with him. The gunman fired his first shots at 09:57 in a second-floor fifth-grade classroom. He then moved to the third floor, forcing entry to a seventh-grade room before returning to the same lavatory. At 10:04 he telephoned his mother, and at 10:07 he shot himself in a toilet cubicle. In seven minutes he discharged about forty rounds, killing nine students and one teacher. The dead included seven girls and three boys aged 14 to 17, plus a 59-year-old teacher who died later in hospital. Emergency services arrived within six minutes and evacuated the school in seventeen. Around 160 paramedics and firefighters treated thirty people at the nearby Helmut-List-Halle, which became an emergency triage centre. Police brought in 300 officers, including the Einsatzkommando Cobra tactical unit. A disaster alert was issued to hospitals across Graz. The building was secured by 10:28 and all victims accounted for by 10:13.
