Church of All Saints

All Saints Church stands in the village of Aisholt, Somerset, on the edge of the Quantock Hills. It serves the ancient parish of Aisholt, now part of the Quantock Villages Benefice in the Diocese of Bath and Wells. The church is a Grade II* listed building, recognised for its historical and architectural importance. The oldest surviving part is the chancel arch from the 14th century, while most of the structure dates from the 15th century. Later changes were made in the 1890s, including some restoration work. The church is worth visiting for its medieval features and the notable people connected to it. The chancel arch, irregular and asymmetrical, is a rare survival from the 1300s. Inside, a 17th-century hatchment hangs above the door, and a medieval parish chest cut from a single log remains in place. The octagonal font from the 15th century and the piscina in the chancel add to its historical interest. The church also has links to literary figures, including the diarist William Holland, who served as curate here in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Visitors find a simple stone building with a slate roof, consisting of a nave, chancel, vestry, and south aisle with a porch. The west tower has two stages and diagonal buttresses. A squint in the masonry allows a view of the altar from the south aisle. The church contains memorials to Olive Willis, Anne Ridler, and Charles Williams, reflecting its cultural significance. A plaque commemorates Willis, while Ridler and Williams, both connected to the area, are remembered for their contributions to education and literature. The building’s quiet setting among the hills makes it a peaceful place to explore.
