Elie Ness Lighthouse

Elie Ness Lighthouse stands on a rocky headland north of Elie, overlooking the Firth of Forth in Fife. A small white round tower with a crenellated top, it reaches eleven metres and is joined by a matching square building used for equipment. The Northern Lighthouse Board once managed it from Edinburgh, but Forth Ports now maintains the site. Built in 1908, the light flashes white every six seconds from a focal plane fifteen metres above sea level. The lantern room sits within the crenellations, sending its beam across the estuary to guide vessels day and night. The open grounds surround the buildings, while the interiors remain locked to visitors. Visitors walk the headland to see the lighthouse and enjoy wide views of the Forth’s waters and distant shores. The whitewashed walls contrast with the grey rocks and green grass, making a clear landmark against the sky. Seabirds often circle the point, adding to the scene. The simple, functional design reflects its purpose rather than ornament.
