Burgruine Reifenstein

Burgruine Reifenstein stands on a wooded hill above the village of Pöls in the Steiermark. The ruins occupy the site of a medieval fortress built in the 12th century by the Reifenstein family. During the 13th and 14th centuries the castle was enlarged and later passed to families serving the Duke of Austria. In 1415 Hussite raiders from Bohemia caused serious damage to the structure. By the 15th century ownership changed several times before Sebald Pögl of Thörl bought it in 1521 and rebuilt it in Renaissance style. The Schwarzenberg family acquired the estate in 1698 and still own the castle and surrounding forest today.
The castle remained lived-in until 1809, when its owners removed the roof to prevent French troops from quartering there during the Napoleonic Wars. Without a roof the building decayed quickly, leaving the walls and towers that visitors see now. Several maintained trails lead up the hillside to the ruins, making the site easy to reach on foot. The paths wind through mixed woodland that adds to the atmosphere of the approach. At the top, stone walls rise above the treetops, framing views across the valley.
Inside the enclosure the remains of the Renaissance palace and the older medieval core are clearly visible. Sections of curtain wall stand to full height, showing the thickness of the original construction. One round tower still reaches several metres above ground, offering a vantage point over the surrounding countryside. The interior is open and airy, with no modern additions to obscure the historic fabric. From the highest point of the ruins the eye travels across rolling hills and distant villages, linking the past with the present landscape.
