Landguard Fort
Landguard Fort stands at the mouth of the River Orwell near Felixstowe in Suffolk. It was first built in 1540 as a simple earthwork blockhouse called Langer Fort. King James I later ordered a stronger square fort with corner bulwarks in 1621. The fort played a key role in defending the coast during the 17th century, facing a Dutch attack in 1667. A new pentagonal fort was built in the 18th century, with further upgrades in the 19th century. The fort’s unusual caponier and bombproof casemates were added in the 1870s. Today, it is managed by English Heritage and open to visitors. The fort is worth visiting for its military history and unique features. In 1667, Dutch forces landed nearby but were repelled by Nathaniel Darrel’s garrison of 400 musketeers and 100 artillerymen. The fort once had paintings by the young Thomas Gainsborough, though they were destroyed by damp. During the Napoleonic Wars, General Lord Cornwallis inspected the fort, and later, a poorly disciplined garrison suffered casualties from captured smuggler’s gin. In World War II, it launched thousands of incendiary balloons as part of Operation Outward. The fort also served as a radar station and anti-aircraft headquarters. Visitors find a well-preserved 19th-century fort with concrete gun emplacements and a keep-like barracks. The Left Battery’s 10-inch gun pit was converted into an anti-aircraft operations room. The fort’s caponier, with its quarter-sphere bombproof nose, is a rare feature. Nearby, the Landguard Bird Observatory monitors migrating birds. The fort’s high vantage point offers views over the Orwell Estuary and Felixstowe’s coastline. The surviving structures include the Governor’s Quarters and the old casemated battery. The site remains a striking example of coastal defence history.
