Niederau, Kath. Pfarrkirche hl. Sixtus mit Kriegerdenkmal

The parish church of Niederau stands at the southern edge of the village in Wildschönau, a valley in Tirol. It is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Sixtus II and belongs to the Reith deanery in the Salzburg archdiocese. The church and its war memorial are protected as historic monuments. The building began as a church in 1409 and became a parish church in 1891. Its core is Romanesque and late-Gothic from the late 15th century. In 1740 Jakob Singer transformed it in the Baroque style, and in 1970 Clemens Holzmeister extended it westward. The tower on the north side of the choir still shows Romanesque twin windows from the 13th century beneath a Gothic pointed helm roof. Inside, after the 1970 extension, two bays of the nave and the two-bay choir with a five-sided end stand under Gothic vaults covered in Baroque plaster. The high altar of 1676 carries a relief of Saints Sixtus and Oswald by Josef Bachlechner from 1900, flanked by Baroque statues by Thomas Eder. The left side altar of about 1695 holds a Mariahilf image and statues of Sebastian and Rochus by Johann Michael Mayr. The right side altar of about 1685 features an Anna selbdritt painting by Jakob Niederkircher and statues of the weather saints John and Paul by the same hand.
