Shakespeare North Playhouse stands in Prescot, Merseyside, a modern theatre and cultural hub opened in 2022. The four-storey complex replaced a car park near Prescot Parish Church, with land provided by Knowsley Council and the Earl of Derby. Its design draws on Inigo Jones’s 1629 plans for the Cockpit-in-Court theatre in London, adapted by Helm Architecture and Austin-Smith:Lord. The playhouse includes a 420-seat auditorium, a studio space, an outdoor garden, and an exhibition centre. Funding came from the council, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, private investors, and a £700,000 donation from Ken Dodd’s widow. The Shakespeare North Trust, founded by Richard Wilson and David Thacker, led the project, with the Earl of Derby as patron. The playhouse revives the legacy of Prescot’s 16th-century theatre, which operated from the mid-1590s to 1609 on Eccleston Street. Though no original plans survive, the new building recreates the spirit of that early playhouse. The outdoor garden honours comedian Ken Dodd’s contribution, while the main auditorium hosts performances and educational programmes. The educational centre supports lifelong learning, linking the past with contemporary culture. The project faced setbacks, including an unsuccessful £20 million National Lottery bid in 2007, but eventually secured funding through public and private sources. Visitors find a mix of modern theatre and historical inspiration. The auditorium seats 420, with a studio space for smaller productions. The outdoor garden provides a place for open-air performances, while the exhibition centre displays artefacts and information. The playhouse’s location near the parish church makes it easy to reach, blending into Prescot’s town centre. The lead artist, Simon Watkinson, contributed to the theatre’s visual identity. The complex reflects a community effort, from council support to private donations, creating a space for both art and education.
