Blists Hill Victorian Town

Blists Hill Victorian Town stands on the edge of Madeley in Shropshire, where a former industrial site has been transformed into an open-air museum. The museum recreates a late 19th-century Shropshire town, complete with shops, workshops and industrial buildings. It is managed by the National Trust and forms part of the Ironbridge Gorge group. The site includes three distinct districts: a town area, an industrial quarter and a countryside section. Original structures, relocated buildings and replicas all contribute to the scene. The museum opened in 1973 and has grown steadily since then. The museum’s value lies in its living history. Costumed demonstrators perform period crafts such as printing, iron founding and pig-keeping. They speak in the third person about Victorian practices, allowing visitors to compare past and present methods. The bank on the High Street once exchanged modern coins for Victorian tokens, which could be used throughout the site. A replica of Richard Trevithick’s 1802 steam locomotive runs on short tracks on selected days. The Hay Inclined Plane, a 207-foot canal lift, forms part of the museum and the South Telford Heritage Trail. Visitors walk along the recreated High Street past a chemist, butcher and printer. Behind the town lies the ironworks area, where blast furnace remains and beam engines recall the site’s industrial past. The countryside section features a tin tabernacle and a squatter’s cottage. A narrow-gauge mine railway and an inclined lift provide access to lower parts of the site. The Severn Trow Spry rests in a dry berth, and the ruins of the brickworks mark the edge of the museum.
