Lenzie Moss

Lenzie Moss is a local nature reserve in Lenzie, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland. It covers lowland raised bogs and deciduous woodland mainly of silver birch. The bogs were once heavily cut for peat, leaving visible trenches and pools. The reserve shelters wildlife such as rabbits, deer and foxes. A narrow-gauge railway once served the peat trade across the moss. The site has faced threats from development proposals. In 2012 locals opposed plans by Lenzie Rugby Football Club to build houses on the moss’s edge. In 1989 the club sought permission for 45 homes, prompting petitions and protests. The Friends of Lenzie Moss was formed in 1985 to campaign for its conservation. The reserve is valued for its peace and tranquillity. Visitors find open bogs, birch woodland and rough paths across the reserve. The area near Alexandra Avenue has seen occasional incidents involving groups of young people. Lenzie Moss remains a quiet place for wildlife and walkers despite these challenges.
