Fragrance Museum

The Farina Fragrance Museum stands in Cologne’s Innenstadt, directly opposite the city hall and close to the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum. The building itself dates to 1709 and has housed the Farina perfume business ever since 1723. John Maria Farina created Eau de Cologne here, giving the city a scent that became known across Europe. Inside, visitors move through several floors that trace perfume-making from raw ingredients to finished bottles. Glass cases hold early distillation equipment and later machines that show how techniques changed. Photographs and ledgers on the walls explain how Farina guarded his recipes while rivals copied them. The museum also displays a collection of counterfeit bottles that flooded the market in the 18th century. At street level, the shop sells original Farina perfumes made on site. The scent of citrus and herbs lingers in the rooms, reminding visitors of the original Eau de Cologne. Outside, the building’s plain façade hides centuries of craftsmanship within.
