Komturei Bergen

The Komturei Bergen is a historic manor house in Bergen, a village now part of Wanzleben-Börde. The estate stands within a walled courtyard, reached through an 18th-century gateway. The oldest surviving structure is a late Romanesque to early Gothic chapel built for the German Order. The manor became the residence of Hans von Lossow, who served as Komtur from 1570. His coat of arms, dated 1579, is carved above a door in the southern wing of a Baroque manor house. A tall tower on the east side of the house began as a 16th-century oriel, later raised and topped with a lantern. Nearby, a large dovecote built in 1843 marks the northern edge of the former farmyard. Visitors walk past the chapel and enter a two-storey half-timbered house where the Komtur once lived. The dovecote and remaining 19th-century farm buildings frame the open courtyard. The chapel’s simple stonework and the inscribed plaque recall the estate’s long history under the German Order until 1806.
