St David's Church

St David’s Church stands in Haigh, a village on the edge of Wigan in Greater Manchester. Built between 1830 and 1833, it was designed by Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson. The church received a grant of £3,433 from the Church Building Commission to help pay for its construction. It began as a chapel serving Wigan Parish Church before becoming a separate parish in 1838. In 1886 the east end was extended by J. Medland Taylor to create more space for worship. The building is made of stone with a slated roof and red ridge tiles, showing Gothic Revival style. Inside, the nave has a flat ceiling while the chancel features a hammerbeam roof. A stone gallery sits at the west end, and a baptistry is tucked beneath the south arch. Stained glass includes a window by Heaton, Butler and Bayne. Outside, the churchyard wall and a 1909 lychgate are also Grade II listed. The churchyard holds war graves for three First World War service personnel and seven from the Second World War. Thin buttresses and tall lancet windows line the sides of the church, and a gabled bellcote rises above the west porch. The east window has three lights, and triple lancet windows appear in the porch gable.
