Schloss Einödberg

Schloss Einödberg stands near Mittersill in Salzburg’s Pinzgau region. It sits beside an old medieval road on the left bank of the Salzach. The building began as a 13th-century stone tower, part of a noble family’s fortified home. Over centuries it grew into a larger residence with corner turrets and a wider eastern wing. The farmhouse next to it still shows its medieval origins in stone and timber.
The castle’s history is tied to Salzburg’s archbishops and local knights. In the 16th century the Hunt family enlarged the tower and added turrets. Later the Welser family became owners and gave the place its present shape. After many changes of hands it became a farmhouse, then briefly a guesthouse. Inside, simple 16th- and 17th-century ceilings remain.
Today the main building has two small pyramid-roofed turrets and a three-storey farmhouse attached. The old draw-well has gone, filled in long ago. Inside, plain coffered ceilings recall its past grandeur. The setting beside the Salzach and the medieval road gives a quiet view of the surrounding valley.
