Fetteresso Church

Fetteresso Parish Church stands in Stonehaven, a small town in Aberdeenshire. The present building was designed by John Paterson and completed in 1812. It replaced an earlier medieval church dedicated to St Ciaran, whose chapel may have stood on the same site in the sixth century. The church was enlarged in 1878 and again in 1970 when a hall was added at the west end. Its exterior shows the influence of nearby Fetteresso Castle, with a D-shaped plan and a square tower rising above the main entrance. The church is built in the neo-Gothic style, with a slate roof and tall, narrow windows. The main tower is flanked by smaller octagonal turrets, each topped with battlements and small pointed pinnacles. The south-east front is curved, giving the building a distinctive outline against the sky. Inside, the organ was presented in 1876 by the owners of Ury House, and the interior was partly refitted in 1884. The west hall provides space for community gatherings and events. Visitors approach along quiet streets north of Bath Street to find a solid, unadorned exterior. The main door is set beneath a pointed arch, and the tower rises sharply above it. From the south-east, the curved façade and tall windows create a striking view. Inside, the organ occupies a lofty position above the entrance. The hall at the west end opens onto a small courtyard, linking the church to the surrounding town.
