Schlosstheater Neuwied

The Schlosstheater Neuwied stands in a side building of Neuwied Castle in the district of Neuwied. It began as a comedy house on the market square in 1777, built with support from the local count. The present building grew from a private theatre founded in 1840 and became a public residence theatre in 1859. The theatre is now the main seat of the Landesbühne Rheinland-Pfalz, which performs and produces plays there. In 1977 and 1978 the building was fully renovated and rebuilt with funds from the Schlosstheater Foundation. A new workshop building nearby houses costume and prop storage added in 2004. Inside, visitors find the stage and auditorium of the Landesbühne along with workshops for scenery and costumes. The theatre’s setting within the castle grounds offers a quiet contrast to the town centre. The side building itself reflects the 18th-century origins of Neuwied’s theatrical life.
