Burg Plieningen

The Burg Plieningen once stood near the former Gasthaus zur Sonne, now Scharnhauser Strasse 1, in the Plieningen district of Stuttgart. The local noble family, the Herren von Plieningen, first appeared in records in 1142 and acted as officials for the Counts Palatine of Tübingen from the early 13th century. This suggests the castle was built around 1200, probably where the later Mönchhof farm now stands. The castle was destroyed in 1288 and by 1524 it was recorded only as a Burgstall, a site marked by earthworks. No visible remains survive today, yet its history is tied to the development of Plieningen itself. Archaeological work has helped place the castle’s likely location within the modern landscape. Visitors today find a quiet corner of Plieningen where the castle once commanded the view. The site lies close to the old inn and the present-day street, with no ruins to see. The area remains residential, yet the memory of the medieval stronghold lingers in local place names and historical accounts.
