Bewl Water

Bewl Water is a large reservoir in the valley of the River Bewl, lying between Kent and East Sussex. It was created by damming the river valley in the 1970s to supply water to towns in the region. The reservoir holds over 31,300 million litres of water, making it the largest inland body of water in Southeast England. Water is pumped in from the River Medway when its flow exceeds 275 million litres per day. Plans exist to raise the water level further to meet growing demand, though this could affect the river’s ecosystems. The reservoir supports a wide range of leisure activities through the Bewl Water Outdoor Centre. Visitors can sail, windsurf, row, fish for trout or predators, and try paddleboarding. A floating obstacle course adds to the water-based fun. On land, the 20-kilometre Round Reservoir Route offers walking and cycling paths around the water’s edge. Local clubs provide organised sessions for canoeing, sailing, and rowing. The surrounding landscape is mostly wooded, with gentle slopes leading down to the water. The reservoir’s banks are popular for picnics and quiet walks. The area attracts both serious water sports enthusiasts and families looking for outdoor recreation.
