Children's Book House in the Altona Museum

The Kinderbuchhaus in Hamburg’s Altonaer Museum is a dedicated space for original illustrations from children’s and young adult literature. It sits on the ground floor of the museum, once the museum archive, with its own stage, workshop room and offices. The building is part of the Altonaer Museum, a cultural institution in the city. The house was opened in November 2005 by the non-profit Forum für Bilder-Buch-Kultur e.V., supported by local cultural authorities and publishing houses. It promotes reading through workshops led by artists and authors for school groups and adults. The programme also includes readings, talks and book presentations throughout the year. Visitors find changing exhibitions of original illustrations, such as Sabine Wilharm’s heroes or Peter Schössow’s harbour scenes. The workshop space hosts sessions where children and adults create their own book art. A stage hosts readings and performances linked to the exhibitions. The rooms are designed to make book culture tangible for all ages.
