Church of St Mary, Portskewett

St Mary’s Church stands in the heart of Portskewett, a village in Monmouthshire, Wales. The building has a Norman nave with later medieval additions and Gothic Decorated features. It was enlarged and restored in the early and late 19th century. Since 1955 the church has held Grade I listed status. The first rector on record dates from 1427, and parish registers begin in 1593. The church’s Norman core and medieval chancel survive largely intact. Gothic Decorated windows and detailing appear throughout the structure. Nineteenth-century work added new windows and fittings while preserving earlier fabric. The Grade I listing recognises the building’s outstanding architectural and historical interest. Its long sequence of rectors and registers offers a rare glimpse into local church life over centuries. Inside, the nave shows plain Norman arches and thick walls. The chancel contains a 19th-century screen and fittings. Gothic windows cast changing patterns of light across the stonework. The registers and rector lists sit in the vestry, recording baptisms, marriages and burials since the 16th century. The churchyard holds simple headstones and mature yews beside the building.
