A prehistoric burial site stands on a gentle hillside in the Brecon Beacons near Cathedin in Powys. The round cairn dates from the late Stone Age and the start of the Bronze Age. Its purpose was probably linked to funerary rituals and ceremonies for the dead. Cadw has listed the site as a scheduled monument under reference BR296. The round cairn differs from a ring cairn, which has a different form and use. The cairn is one of many ancient burial mounds in the area. It was built to cover a single grave or small group of graves. The stones were piled into a low, circular heap about a metre high. Over centuries the edges have spread and softened, blending with the surrounding grassland. Visitors reach the site along a farm track that climbs from the valley. The mound sits in open moorland with wide views across the hills. There are no fences or barriers, so the cairn can be walked around freely. The setting is quiet and remote, with only the sound of wind and occasional sheep. The simple stone heap remains as it was left more than four thousand years ago.
