Pfarrkirche Mariä Heimsuchung

The parish church of Langenegg stands on the eastern edge of the Bregenzerwald village of Langenegg in Vorarlberg. Its west front faces the road and the building is surrounded by a cemetery. The church is dedicated to the Feast of the Visitation of Mary and belongs to the Vorderwald-Kleinwalsertal deanery. It has been under historic preservation since the 19th century. The present church was completed in 1775 by Hans Konrad Nußbaumer and Konrad Mennel after a fire destroyed the earlier building. The ceiling and wall paintings from 1776 by Johann Michael Koneberg are regarded as his masterpiece. The high altar, side altars, pulpit and organ date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A thorough restoration took place between 1965 and 1967. Inside, the flat ceiling over the nave and choir is divided by painted pilasters and lunette vaults. The west gallery rests on basket-arched arcades with wooden supports. The choir shows Esther before Ahasuerus, while the nave displays scenes from the life of Mary. The north wall of the choir bears a newly uncovered Last Supper painted in the 18th century. The church’s furnishings include a high altar with a rose-garland scene, a late-Gothic Madonna statue and an 1840 organ restored in 1962.
