Pfarrkirche Heiliger Kanzian

The parish church of St Kanzian in Saak stands in the Nötscher district of Kärnten. It is a late-Gothic building with a slightly recessed choir and a low tower set into its northern corner. The nave is braced by stepped buttresses and filled with pointed windows, while the choir has six more buttresses and three two-light lancets with original tracery. A small sacristy was added in the Baroque period, and a closed porch with a large round-arched door is more recent. The churchyard surrounds the building, its walls enclosing both church and graves. A Baroque crucifix stands among the tombs, and Anton Kolig’s grave is marked near the choir’s south side. A gravestone for Franz Wiegele is set into the wall, and on the nave’s south wall Michor’s tomb carries a 1929 fresco by Kolig showing a seated Madonna and Child flanked by four angels. Beside the church is the former rectory, built in 1757 by Johann Andrä Semler Baron zu Scharfenstein. The two-storey building has a hipped roof and early-20th-century plaster decorations on its east and west fronts. Inside, several rooms retain fielded-stucco ceilings, original door leaves, box locks and wooden floors from the time of its construction.
