Lechtal Alps

The Lechtal Alps stretch across western Austria, forming part of the Northern Limestone Alps. They lie in the states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, named after the river Lech which flows north into Germany. The range is bordered by the Ötztal, Samnaun, Verwall and Allgäu Alps. Its peaks rise sharply from valleys carved by glaciers and rivers over centuries. The range’s highest summit is the Parseierspitze at 3,040 metres. Other notable peaks include the Dawinkopf and the Südlicher Schwarzer Kopf, both exceeding 2,900 metres. The varied rock types—limestone, dolomite and slate—create dramatic ridges and steep faces. Hikers and climbers come for routes that test both skill and endurance. The contrast between high summits and deep valleys draws mountaineers year-round. Visitors find well-marked trails winding through alpine meadows and larch forests. Above the treeline, bare ridges lead to summits offering wide views across Vorarlberg and Tyrol. Mountain huts provide rest and shelter on longer routes. The valleys below hold quiet villages where local crafts and food are on display. The Lechtal Alps remain a place where nature’s scale and quiet still dominate.
