Telford Theatre

Telford Theatre stands in Limes Walk, Oakengates, a town in Shropshire. It was once Oakengates Town Hall, built in the 1960s to meet the needs of a growing community tied to coal mining and iron ore industries. The building was designed by Maurice Day in a modern style, using concrete, brick and glass. It opened in 1968 with Sir Gordon Richards, a famous jockey, cutting the ribbon. The long frontage faces southeast, with a striking canted entrance and wide canopies over the pavement. The theatre has hosted many notable events, including concerts by Fleetwood Mac in 1969 and Showaddywaddy in 1983. It became a key venue for local council meetings and public gatherings over the decades. In 1989, an auditorium was added and the building reopened as Oakengates Theatre. Further refurbishments followed, including a reopening by comedian Julian Clary in 2005 as The Place. The name changed again in 2022 to Telford Theatre. Inside, visitors find a large auditorium, a new studio theatre, a bar and dining area. The building’s modern design remains a landmark in the area. Its history reflects the town’s growth and changing needs. The theatre continues to serve as a cultural hub for the region.
