Det lille Teater

Det lille Teater stands in Flensburg, a town on the German-Danish border. Its home is the listed building Hjemmet in Marienstraße, built in 1840 close to the old city wall. The site once held the Marientor, a tower of the medieval defences. A doctor commissioned the house, which later became the winter residence of Jens Jessen, editor of the Flensborg Avis. Nearby, the Burghof was erected between 1909 and 1910. After 1920 the building served local youth and club work until 1966. In that year a group of amateur actors founded Det lille Teater and took Hjemmet as their base. The theatre expanded in 1978 with a new stage, and again between 2008 and 2009. It belongs to the Danish Youth Association and presents plays and music theatre. Since 1980 its small puppet theatre has become a regular part of the programme. Danish touring companies also perform here several times a year across South Schleswig. Visitors find a working theatre with a stage for speech and music. The puppet theatre shares the space, adding variety to the repertoire. The building itself, with its historic walls, provides a fitting setting for performances. The theatre remains a lively venue for the Danish minority in the region.
