Schloss Laugna

Schloss Laugna stands in the village of Laugna, in the Schwaben region of Bavaria. It is a two-winged building with an octagonal corner tower, set in the middle of the village. A small park and a tall stone wall surround the site. The structure dates back to the late 16th century, when the Augsburg patrician Albrecht von Stetten built a manor house. In 1613 the Fugger family, who had just purchased the Herrschaft Bocksberg estate, expanded the building into a proper castle. The castle’s history is closely tied to the Fugger family and their forestry operations. From 1811 until 2005 it housed the Fürstlich und Gräflich Fuggersches Stiftungs-Forstamt, the central office for the Fuggers’ extensive forest districts. The Diele on the upper floor still shows ornate stucco ceilings added around 1830. A carved Fugger coat of arms is set into the front of the tower, marking the forestry office’s long presence here. Visitors cannot enter the castle itself, but the exterior and its surroundings remain impressive. The octagonal tower rises above the village rooftops, and the stone wall gives the place a fortified feel. The small park offers a quiet spot to walk, and the village street leads straight to the castle gate. The Fugger coat of arms on the tower is the clearest sign of the building’s past.
