Pfarrkirche hl. Martin, Wolfern

The parish church of Wolfern stands in the market town of Wolfern in Upper Austria. It is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Martin and belongs to the Steyr deanery in the Diocese of Linz. The church is protected as a listed monument. The church dates back to at least 1318, when the parish was first mentioned in records. During the 14th century, conflicts between Catholics and Waldensians led to the burning of the rectory twice. Construction of the present church began in the late Gothic style, with the main portal dated 1523. The tower was rebuilt in 1834 after the original wooden one was removed, and further renovations followed in 1880, 1910, 1953 and 1980–81. Inside, the church has a two-bay choir with a net-ribbed vault and a three-eighths closure, built around 1434. The nave has two aisles and three bays with cross vaults on pillars. The walls of the nave are decorated with 16th-century paintings, and twelve Gothic apostle crosses encircle the altar area. The west tower has a bulbous dome, and a bell cast in 1792 hangs inside. The original furnishings were lost long ago, but the restored wall paintings and decorative elements remain.
